Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN)
Finally high speed internet service is available in much of Alaska from a small
portable device accessing the Inmarsat BGAN satellite network. BGAN stands for broadband global area network and it lives up to its name.
The Wideye by AddValue combines small size (3.6 lb) with performance, flexibility, and economy. For most users, it is a
complete mobile office solution.
BGAN INTERNET PERFORMANCE:
Standard IP data/internet access up to 384 kbps download / 240 kbps upload using either Ethernet or Bluetooth data interfaces.
The terminal is ideal for single users who need to set up a complete broadband mobile office in frequently changing locations.
BGAN VOICE COMMUNICATION:
Voice communication is available using a corded handset (included) or wirelessly using an optional Bluetooth handset.
The Wideye is great for users with a lodge or fixed-site location, too: standard phone equipment can be connected to the Wideye
via its RJ-11 jack.
CURRENT BGAN COVERAGE:
BGAN service reached parts of Alaska in early 2009 (see coverage map to the right).
It is necessary to point the BGAN antenna at the satellite, and your antenna must be pointed
fairly low over the southern horizon when you are in Alaska. Areas where your view of the satellite is blocked by
mountains or other other obstructions will not have coverage, even if coverage is indicated by the map.
We are assembling a map of points where coverage has actually been tested,
and our customers are invited to send us
GPS coordinates of their successful and unsuccessful tests.
